Negotiating Your AI Engineer Salary in 2026
You got the offer. The number is good but you have leverage. Here's how to negotiate effectively.
The Market Rates
Senior IC (5+ years): $200-350K total comp depending on company stage.
- Startups: $150-200K + significant equity
- Big Tech: $220-320K + bonus + stock
Mid-level (2-4 years): $150-250K total comp.
- Startups: $120-160K + equity
- Big Tech: $160-220K + bonus + stock
Junior (0-1 year): $100-150K total comp.
These numbers assume US market. Supply/demand favors you right now. Most offers have 20-40% negotiation room.
The Negotiation Process
1. Always counter. Even if the offer is great. Silence signals weakness. Counter at +15-20%.
2. Focus on total comp, not salary. For startup offers, negotiate equity separately. 0.1% at a Series A is worth more than $20K salary.
3. Ask for competing offers. If you have multiple offers, mention them. "I have another offer at $200K..." is more powerful than "$200K is market rate."
4. Get it in writing. Verbal agreements don't count. Once you have a written offer, the negotiation is done.
5. Don't mention personal needs. "I need $150K because of my mortgage" doesn't work. They don't care about your personal situation.
What You Can Negotiate Besides Salary
- Sign-on bonus (especially at big tech)
- Equity amount and vest schedule
- Remote work flexibility
- Professional development budget
- Performance bonus structure

The Walk-Away Point
Know your minimum acceptable offer before negotiating. If they won't meet it, you walk. Having other options makes walking easier.
Most engineers accept the first offer. A quick 20-minute conversation gets you 20-30K more. Do the math on your time.
